forever in a day

With the help of my publisher’s efforts and the 99 cent sale for the Kindle version of the book, Forever managed to reach #28 in one of it’s genre categories on Amazon this week.  Even today it’s still clinging to the top 100 in the  Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Literature & Fiction > Horror > United States category.

That’s pretty exciting in this little corner of the world!

Have you read Forever?  Feel free to ask questions if you have them, here on the blog or on Goodreads.  I wouldn’t mind a review either!  Reviews are important in the world of independent authors.

In other news, I’m making exciting progress on my next project and my head is filled with new stories.  This time of year is always my most productive.  I love the chill in the air, and the darker half of the year is where I feel at home.

Forever is still on sale until November 8th, on amazon.com and amazon.co.uk.

And if you prefer paperback, those are available also.  If you’re interested in getting a signed copy, comment below and I’ll be in touch.

everyone loves book recs & free stuff!

Just a reminder that my giveaway is open for you to jump into over on Goodreads.com.  I have two copies of Forever up for grabs.  Sign ups close on Halloween at midnight.

So far, more than 400 people have raised their hand to be included.

You can join the fun here on Goodreads.

While I have your attention, let me point you to some awesome work by other awesome women that I know:

Fellow Creativia author and friend, Susan-Alia Terry’s debut book is called Coming Darkness and it is so very well crafted.  Imagine if you will that Lucifer was never sent to hell, just banished from heaven.  And imagine him with a vampire for a lover.  Add in some political intrigue, some culture clash among the Otherkin and a grand mystery in the form of beings more powerful than God himself.  Her characters are brilliant and their story is vibrant and alive.

Another friend with a debut novel this year is K.B. Wagers, whose debut novel, Behind the Throne, is the sci-fi with a kickass female lead you didn’t even know you were waiting for.  The story begins with a gunrunner with a secret past finding her past catching up to her and whether she wants to or not, she’s going to have to face up to everything she left behind. What follows is a roller coaster space epic that leaves you white knuckled and breathless.  Get it now, because the sequel, After the Crown drops on December 13th.

One last one for today.  If you dig sassy female protagonists, check out my friend, and one time critique partner, Carlye Knight’s first book, Confessions of a Failed Preacher’s Daughter.  The story takes the form of the main character’s blog and it revels in all the emotions of being a teenager, amplified through the megaphone of being a PK (preacher’s kid).

There you have it.  Go sign up!  Go read!

a giveaway and a 5-star Review

Today is the day that my giveaway opens for entry over on Goodreads. It runs now through October 31st and the winners get a signed copy mailed to them direct from me!

In other news, I’ve been anticipating my first professional review on pins and needles, and I got word this morning that it was ready.  The website Reader’s Favorite has a reputation for honest and fair reviews, and they have a waiting list three miles long.

Reviewer Kathryn Bennett gave Forever a wonderful 5 Star review, which you can view on their site.

They also run a book contest every year, which I have entered.  Excitement abounds!

who wants a vampire story for Halloween?

It’s the time of year when people turn their eyes to scary stories, to Gothic tomes of vampires and witches and other dark things…well, I do that all year round, but others come to them at this time of year.  What better time than now to explore Forever?

The book has been getting some wonderful reviews.  The most recent review says, “Forever by Natalie Case is dark and dramatic vampire story. If readers are looking for something different than the typical teen angst vampire novels, Forever is worth checking out.”  A fellow author said, “Natalie’s writing is like poetry and adds a new freshness to vampire fiction.”

Does that whet your appetite?  Starting on Friday, you can enter to win one of two signed copies over on Goodreads.  The winners will be drawn on October 31st.

Or, if you wanted to get your hands on it before then, you could hop over to Amazon to buy your copy, in either Kindle or paperback.

If you wanted a signed copy, you can Paypal me $20 (covers the book and shipping for domestic US addresses) to natalie@nataliejcase.com. Just be sure to include your mailing address and what name you want me to use in personalizing.  If you’re outside of the states, email me first so I can get you mailing rates.

I should get myself back to work.  Happy Wednesday, Readers!

Forever, an excerpt

I thought maybe I could tantalize you with a few words from Forever.

This comes from Chapter four:

There came a time when I decided that I wanted him, in all the ways I can want.  I was no longer content to watch from the shadows.  I approached him, tantalized him with the ability to translate a text from my homeland, drew him close to me.  It was a slow process of gaining his trust, of sharing ideas, thoughts.  His belief was strong, but not entirely that of his people.  Something had altered him significantly in his youth.  He never did say what it was, but it was always there, somewhere beneath the conversation.  He was charismatic, passionate and argumentative. I started out trying to seduce him, but in the end, it was I who was seduced.

We would sit for long hours discussing some obscure text or a bit of poetry.  Or, we would debate the nature of life, or evil, or gods. Other times we would each be caught up in ourselves and pay little attention to the other.

“Is it so difficult for you to believe that there is evil so dark that it cannot stand the light of day?”  he asked, exasperated one evening when we had been debating around and around the subject.

“Of course not, Jesse, I only think you shouldn’t hunt it so closely.”  The last rays of the sun had long since vanished, leaving heavy shadows hanging in the room where we debated, our table filled with texts of contradicting theories regarding the Clans. “There are some things better left to the night.  Come, let me take you to dinner.”

“No.”  He was sullen that night, not exactly depressed, but adamant in his refusal to be cheered.  “I have more work to do.”

“Let me help then.  Where were we?”  I shuffled through the gathered papers until I found the scroll he had been reading from when our discussion had erupted.  It was a text from a land not far from the place where it all began, where Bestin created the first of the Family.  It was not old, perhaps twenty years or less.  “There is then, hidden by the darkness, an evil which drinks the very life of our people, stealing through the night and leaving in its wake a trail of death,” I read to him.

I had seen the words before, though couldn’t place where.  “It was once as we are, but the demon rose within it, and changed it forever.  It cannot die, it cannot be stopped.”

I put the scroll down.  “It sounds to me like the ramblings of a paranoid mind.”

“Perhaps,” he conceded.  He was thoughtful, his handsome face almost blank as his thoughts swirled around the words.  I found it fascinating to watch, I was holding my breath.  “Perhaps the author was paranoid.  Perhaps he was demented.  Does that make his words any less true?  Slanted, maybe, but he must have seen something to make him write this.  Here, what about this one?”

He pulled a much older clay tablet to him and tilted it to the flickering light. He licked his lips, and read haltingly, translating as he read.  “I am Darious, priest and teacher.  I serve his Highness Dukant.  On this night, I have seen evil with my own eyes.  He came from the mountain and fell to prey upon two men.  He had eyes of coal staring out of the whitest face, and teeth that were long and sharp, cutting the skin on the necks of his victims easily to drink from their blood. When he was done, the demon raised his bloodied face and took to the skies.  I pray I never see such evil again.”

I shivered.  Something in the words or his voice as he read them conjured the image of Crenoral.  I willed it away, but my face betrayed me.  “See, your heart knows the truth,” he said, his dark blue eyes lighting up.  “What would you say if I told you that I too had seen this demon, this blood feeder?”
